There’s been lots of talk about wedding escort cards recently, especially from the other side of the pond where the trend has really sprouted legs, but these handy little cards have also started to take off here as well. Despite their popularity however, these pieces of wedding stationary do seem to cause some confusion for couples who aren’t 100% sure how to use them. The most common questions are, ‘what are wedding escort cards?’ ‘Are they different from place cards?’ ‘Do I need to use both?’ and ‘what is the best way to use them?

But never fear, as an award-winning wedding planner, I’ve got the answers you’re looking for! In the meantime if you’d like to discuss any aspect of your wedding day plans and how I can help, then please get in touch.

What is an Escort Card?

Simply put, an escort card is a printed card with the guests name on it, which ‘escorts’ or directs them to their assigned table. They are often displayed in an array of quirky and creative ways just at entrance to your reception room so guests can find their names and tables before they go inside. Think of them as an alternative to the traditional table plan or board.

How is it Different to a Place Card?

Think of the escort card as the less formal sister to the place card. While the place card is situated at the actual seat of the guest, the escort card doesn’t list which seat the guest sits in, only the table name or number.

Do I Need to Use Both?

It depends. If you are happy to have your guests choose their own seat at their table, then escort cards alone are the perfect solution, as it will only direct them to their table, but not a specific seat. Whereas, place cards will designate which seat they will sit at and as such you’ll need either a table plan, or escort card to let them know which table they’ll be sitting on.

Escort Card Ideas

There is huge scope to get super creative with your escort cards. They can fit in with practically any theme and the sky is the limit in terms of how you design them. Think of attaching them to little foodie treats like cookies, fruit, chocolates or even a glass of champagne! You can also make the escort card the favour by attaching it to things like jars of preserves, soaps or mini cactus plants. Sit them in corks, pine cones, sit them in customised luggage tags, attached to lanterns, shells, adorn them with glitter, attach them to keys, mini suitcases and much more. The list is endless.
