As a wedding planner, I’ve seen my fair share of wedding cakes and while your wedding cake might not be top of your to-do list, it’s still an important item you need to start thinking about. Thankfully the lead time for cakes is nothing like that for your wedding dress, but it’s a good idea to have an idea in mind about how you want the cake to look.  Do make sure you go and actually try the cake… that’s the fun part, so that it ends up tasting as good as it looks! There’s nothing worse than a cake that looks sensational, but tastes like sawdust.

This season cakes trends have continued to evolve and brides and grooms in 2015 are going for a range of cakes from show stopping to the more understated. Whichever suits your personality, we’ve put together a rundown of some of the more popular cake trends this season which should give you some great ‘cake-spiration. ’ To chat to us about how we can help plan your big day, please don’t hesitate to email us

Over The Rainbow

If you’re desperate to get some colour into your wedding, but are finding it difficult to achieve, then a rainbow cake might be for you. They don’t necessarily have to be huge creations, but they are an ideal way to go for bright colours you might otherwise be afraid to use in your décor or bridesmaids dresses. The idea of the hidden rainbow centre is another really fun twist to consider.

Metallic cakes

Metallic cakes are a big trend this year, but if the idea of metallics fills you with notions of garishness and dread, then take a deep breath because believe or not, they don’t have to be outlandish. In fact, this season’s metallic cakes have a penchant for understated elegance, with just subtle hints of metallic in shades of rose gold being very popular. Of course if you are a bling lover they can be ramped up to the max with golds, glitter and sparkles being added.

Floral cakes

Florals and cakes go together like peanut butter and jelly, but apart from adding fondant flowers, this season edible flowers have become a really popular embellishment for cakes. It’s a trend that can easily be adapted for any season, just chose and edible flower that’s reflective of the time of year. It really channels that secret garden vibe and would be ideal for big or small cakes.

Painted cakes

If you want your cake to feel really personal, then this season’s trend for hand painted cakes is ideal.  Think about everything from florals to landscapes, to favourite landmarks, to inspirational quotes and watercolours. The sky is the limit with this one and it makes for a truly unique cake.  If your cake maker is uncomfortable with doing the hand painting then think about getting the cake done with fondant icing as a base and get an artist to do the painting.  Or if you’ve kids you might want to let them do an ‘Angie’ and let them decorate it.
